EMERGENCY FOOD SHELF
When the budget just can't be stretched any further...
Did you know that over 50% of people using food shelves are employed? And the numbers are rising. In today's economic climate, more and more families are finding that after the bills are paid, there isn't enough money left to buy food for their family. Children in your community skip meals and/or regularly don't have enough to eat.
...PRISM provides necessary support.
PRISM's emergency food shelf provides a 10-15 day supply of emergency food for families in our food shelf service area, along with one-on-one case work and support.
Eligibility Requirements
PRISM is the Hennepin County-designated food shelf for our primary service area. To be eligible for our services, families and individuals must live in Golden Valley; South of 42nd Avenue in Crystal, New Hope, or Robbinsdale; East of 494 in Plymouth (view map)
Exceptions--PRISM will serve people referred by local churches or currently homeless then, if appropriate, refer to other providers.
Food Shelf Appointments
To use PRISM's Food Shelf, call PRISM at (763) 529-1350. Families meeting the eligibility criteria above can schedule an appointment with a Food Shelf Caseworker.
What to Bring
- Photo ID
- Proof of residence (e.g. recent piece of mail)
What to Expect
When a family arrives, they will check in with the receptionist and then sign in at the front desk. First-time clients are asked to fill out an intake form while they wait in the Fireside Resting Room for their appointment.
Appointments last approximately 1/2 hour. During that time, the family and the caseworker discuss the current financial situation and any extraneous circumstances that have caused the family to be short of food. The case worker will review the household budget and offer counseling and suggestions to help the family. Family goal-setting is also offered and followed through on an ongoing basis with the family until they no longer need our support.
Following their time with a case worker, families go to PRISM's grocery-store-style food shelf where they can "shop" for those items they need to provide for their families.
