A single middle aged woman, recently divorced, no children, came to the PRISM food shelf. She was extremely embarrassed as she had always been on the other end- the giving end. Her business was in a slump due to the economy and she no longer could afford to buy food and pay her bills. She felt desperate as she had been trying to find a job to supplement her income and had been unable to. The food shelf at PRISM has provided not only food, but someone she can talk to.
A young woman, separated, with 3 small children contacted PRISM and said she had just heard about PRISM. She was not getting any help from her children’s father. Her lights had been turned off and her gas disconnected. She said she was bathing her children in cold water and didn’t know where else to turn. PRISM provided food, clothing and a phone number to energy assistance to help with her utilities.
A young man, estranged from his family, found himself homeless. He walked into PRISM and said he was hungry and asked for help. He was living and bathing down at “the lake” nearby. He was brought through our food shelf and was very grateful. One problem though, he had all this food but no can opener. A caseworker brought in an extra one from home the next day and he met her here to get it. Clothing vouchers were also given. He did not want much as everything had to fit in his truck. He also talked about being a painter but it was hard to find work when he couldn’t shower. The caseworker provided the phone number and address to Sharing and Caring Hands as they will allow people to shower and clean up. I saw this young man two weeks ago. He had a job painting and was renting a room. PRISM provided food, hope and dignity.
